Back to School Time: Rules of the Bus

August 8, 2025by cowest

As a new school year begins, student safety remains a top priority—starting the moment they step on the bus. Whether students ride the bus every day or only a few times a week, it is essential to regularly review proper school bus behavior and safety practices.

Parents, guardians, and educators play a key role in reinforcing these rules. Below is a compiled list of important bus safety guidelines based on common “School Bus Code of Conduct” policies used by districts. Please review and share these expectations to help ensure every student arrives at school and home safely.

Rules of the Bus

  1. Be on Time
Arrive at the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the scheduled pickup time.
  2. Wait Safely
Stand a safe distance from the curb or roadway. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop and for the doors to open before approaching.
  3. Crossing the Road
If you need to cross the street in front of the bus, do so 10 feet in front of the bus and only after the driver signals that it is safe. Never cross behind the bus.
  4. Dropped Something?
If you drop something near or under the bus, tell the driver immediately. Do not attempt to retrieve it on your own.
  5. Follow the Driver’s Instructions
Always follow the directions of the bus driver or any assistants. Disrespect or disruptive behavior that distracts the driver is not allowed.
  6. Respect Others
Treat fellow passengers and their belongings with respect. Bullying or damaging property is strictly prohibited.
  7. Stay Seated
Students must remain seated, face forward, and always keep the aisle clear. Speak in quiet, respectful tones—no yelling or inappropriate language.
  8. Manage Belongings
Keep all personal items under control. Items must fit on your lap or under the seat and should not block the aisle.
  9. No Food or Drink
Eating, drinking, or spitting on the bus is not allowed. Help keep the bus clean and litter-free.
  10. No Throwing Objects
Never throw anything inside or outside the bus. Students must not damage the bus or trespass on private property.
  11. Stay at Your Stop
Students may only get off at their assigned bus stops. To ride a different bus or be dropped off elsewhere, written permission and prior approval are required.
  12. Responsible Cell Phone Use
Cell phone use should be limited to texting, playing games, or listening to music with headphones. Phone calls and video recording are discouraged to avoid distractions or privacy concerns.
  13. Prohibited Items on the Bus
State law and district policies strictly prohibit the following on school buses:
  • Alcohol, drugs, or tobacco
  • Glass containers
  • Weapons or explosives
  • Fireworks, including smoke or stink bombs
  • Legally prohibited substances
  • Animals, insects, or reptiles
  • Any other dangerous or disruptive items
  1. Emergency Doors
Do not open or exit through the rear emergency door unless directed to by the driver in an emergency.
  2. Keep It Clean
Help keep the bus clean and in good condition for everyone’s safety and comfort.
