With the temperatures dropping steadily, and snow and ice becoming an everyday occurrence, our habits change and adapt to the new circumstances. For our little ones the arrival of winter also means staying inside more, but also being playful and excited when snow covers the streets and sidewalks. Going to school becomes a bit more challenging, especially when you consider the weather conditions and potential dangers in traffic. To keep students safe during winter bus rides to school, here are some ground rules your kids need to respect!
What should your kids do?
- Dress in appropriate apparel – knits, warm jackets, boots – while riding on a school bus keep them close by so they don’t get forgotten on the seat
- Pay attention to smaller clothing items like scarfs that might get caught on the doors
- Factor in more time to get to the bus stop to avoid rushing
- Always cross in front of the bus so the driver can see your kid on the street
- Use the handrail when boarding and exiting the bus to prevent unfortunate slips and potential injuries
- Cross the road on predetermined crossings because cars have a harder time braking on icy roads
What should your kids not do?
- Push and chase anyone at and around the bus stop because of dangerous ice patches that can be hidden underneath the snow
- Use the ice patches for sliding around the road
- Run after the bus or try to latch on to a moving vehicle
- Jump into snow piles around the bus stop to avoid injury
- Be reckless in traffic
Respectful behavior in traffic will help all participants get to their destinations safely!
