Clutch Replacement Tips
Here’s a list of do’s and dont’s when it comes time to replace your clutch:
First, make sure you have the right replacement parts and proper alignment tools before installing any of them. Damage to the disc during installation of the transmission can occur if the person doing the work does not use a pilot tool.
Always inspect the new clutch disc for accurate fitment on the transmission input shaft before installation. Also, the input shaft splines must be free of twisting and wear.
Whenever you have the clutch out, we suggest replacing the existing pilot and throw-out bearings.
Never combine an old pressure plate with a new clutch disc. Always replace with new components.
Replace any worn parts such as input clutch forks, shaft collars, slave/master cylinders, among others.
With the flywheel, properly resurface or replace it. Resurfacing a flywheel with a dedicated flywheel-resurfacing machine only. Also, do not forget to clean the surfaces of the flywheel and the pressure plate with acetone or brake parts cleaner before installing.
The clutch disc has to be mounted against the flywheel on the “flywheel side.”
Use factory specifications for torquing, check the hardware, and replace if necessary. Proper hardware used to affix the pressure plate to the flywheel, and the flywheel to the crankshaft are not typical hardware, but special items. Improper clutch operation, vibration, and clutch failure are possible if the wrong hardware is used.
Do not allow any petroleum-based products to contaminate the clutch disc friction material. Otherwise, the disc may cause premature wear, clutch chatter, slippage, or abnormal clutch operation.
Do not mix brands within the clutch system. Most companies design their products to work best with their own products. This helps guarantee optimal performance and lifespan.
Follow the required break-in procedure for the new clutch assembly to ensure proper seat-in of the friction material, full performance, and adequate heat cycling. Not doing so could void the warranty and cause problems like improper clutch operation, reduced holding capacity, and premature wear.
