Seat belts on school buses

There is no federal law requiring seat belts in school buses. Some states have adopted school bus seat belt laws, and many more states have put school bus seat belt legislation on the 2017 agenda. Parents, teachers, school bus drivers, politicians, and many other people have researched, debated, discussed, and argued over whether seat belts increase or decrease safety on school buses. At CoWest, our opinion is and will always be to follow the requirements of the National Highway Transportation Safety Board (NHTSA), the State Department of Education, and School District Board policy – period!

When a school district is looking to replace an old fleet with a new fleet of Blue Bird school buses, they have to decide whether they want seats with or without seat belts. However, until now, a client could not change their mind. Seats with seat belts cannot be retrofitted to old buses. That also means that if you just bought a fleet of unseatbelted buses for your school district right before a seat belt law was passed, or your opinion of seat belts changed, you would most likely be obligated to get a whole new fleet.
