Earth Day–The Benefits of Clean School Buses

April 21, 2023by cowest

As we mark the 53rd anniversary of Earth Day, we are reminded of how far environmental awareness has come.  In recent years, the implementation of alternative fuel vehicles has helped to reduce emissions from public transportation.  This is just one of the many changes that has made a positive impact, but with the help of many grant opportunities for these vehicles, this transition has gained ground.

Blue Bird has been providing alternative power solutions since 1991 and has always been on the cutting edge when it comes to alternative fuel solutions. As the number one manufacturer of alternative fuel school buses, Blue Bird has produced six times more alternative powered buses than all our competitors combined!”

The Environmental Protection Agency has listed the Benefits of Clean School Buses on its website as follows: Click Here for links.

Benefits of Electric School Buses

  • Zero tailpipe pollution — students, drivers, and members of the community will be exposed to significantly less harmful diesel emissions like PM and NOX
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions compared to diesel school buses.
  • Reduced maintenance costs
    • Less brake wear due to regenerative braking and no engine or exhaust system maintenance
    • Potential for reduced fuel costs compared to diesel depending on electricity costs
  • Quiet, clean operation
  • Potential for fleets to partner with local utilities to feed power back into the grid when buses are not in use and electricity demand is high.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has useful information on the pros and cons of using electricity to power school buses.

Benefits of Alternative Fuel School Buses

  • Potential for reduced greenhouse gas emissions compared to diesel depending on the alternative fuel that is used.
  • Potential for reduced fuel costs compared to diesel depending on the alternative fuel that is used.
  • The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has useful information on the pros and cons of using natural gas and propane to power school buses.
